Yes, we need a better publication model. I reckon eventually everything will be OA, but our funding models need to change for this to happen (I can’t afford to pay $2000 for every article I publish without an explicit funding stream dedicated to that purpose).

On a separate note: Unfortunately this community lacks an open source frontiers/trends/letters in conservation science (e.g., PLoS Conservation) — and paying for occasional open access isn’t what I am referring to here — rather a community with commensurate body of work dedicated to getting timely ideas and findings accessed globally.
